1. Installing the theme
Unzip the file you download after purchase. The following files and folders will be in the unzipped file:
PSDs licensing theme documentation
To install the theme upload the folder widezine (located under the “theme” folder) to the themes folder at your WordPress installation root directory: /wp-content/themes/ through your FTP Client.
Next Log into your WordPress admin panel and click on the Appearance >> Themes tab. After that is done, activate the theme as you would activate any other theme.
If you need help installing WordPress see the following link: http://codex.wordpress.org/Installing_WordPress
2. Permissions
Your theme comes with a built in image resizing script called TimThumb. This script handles the automatic resizing of images throughout your theme. If you’re are having trouble with the script, for instance if images you have de?ned for posts aren’t loading, go through the following troubleshooting tips:
Does your cache folder have the correct permissions?
You need to give your: /wp-content/themes/widezine/cache/ folder full permissions. In most cases this is 777 but it may vary depending on where you are hosted. If 777 does not work, try 755. It is recommended that you contact your host about what permissions to use if you are not sure. Setting permissions is also known as CHMODing, and can be done using most FTP programs and hosting control panels.
Here’s a more in-depth tutorial explaining you how to do this: http://www.phpjunkyard.com/tutorials/ftp-chmod-tutorial.php
Does the file “thumb.php” have the correct permissions?
Make sure the following file has the correct permissions needed for your server: /wp-content/themes/widezine/thumb.php
In most cases this is “644” but it may vary depending on where you are hosted. If 644 does not work, try 755 or 777. It is recommended that you contact your host about what permissions to use if you are not sure. Settings permissions is also known as CHMODing, and can be done using most FTP programs and hosting control panels. You might also want to consult the tutorial link above.
Does your server have the GD library compiled with its version of PHP?
This script requires the GD library to be installed. If your thumbnails are not working, check with your host to make sure that you have it.
Does your server have mod_security settings that are impeding the scripts functionality?
Some servers may have mod_security settings that will stop the script from working. You should always contact your host if you are hthe script from working.
3. Theme Settings
Once you have activated the theme, right under the Appearance tab you will see that a new option named WideZine Theme Options pops out! This is actually the “custom admin panel” of the theme. Herewith I will present you the options:
As you might have already noticed, there are 4 tabs: Theme Settings, Navigation, SEO options, Translations.
1. Theme Settings:
Theme Skin. There are 2 different skins (at the moment, more to come) for your choice, either light either dark. Both of them can be seen in the live preview. Select the one you’d like to use and press Save changes so changes take effect.
Links & Headings Color. Once you click the input, a color picker should pop up. If it does not (might not work if you have JS disabled), just enter the color’s hex code in the input. I guess the title says everything of what about it does. It will change the color of your headings and links!
Custom Stylesheet. If you are willing to make changes to any CSS element from the theme, just use this additional option. You don’t need to open any files. Clicking the “edit custom.css file here” link will take you to the WP Editor and it will open the file for you.
Rounded corners. All of the elements presented in the live demo, as you might have already noticed have rounded corners (3px that’s it!). But if you really hate them, just untick this option and you won’t have to deal with them anymore!
About the Author box. At the end of any post, there is an “about the author” box. This is mostly for magazine / community type of blogs, where there are usually multiple author. But if you think that that box doesn’t suit your needs, just untick the option to take it off!
Related posts box. At the end of every post, related posts will appear (they are selected by the tags, so make sure your blog is using tags!). If you don’t like it, untick the option and move on!
Favicon. If you’d like to use a Favicon for your website, no need to open the header.php file and insert that ugly code. Simply paste the favicon’s link (eg. http://unithemes.net/myfacivon.ico) into the input and voila!
Logo. You have 2 options here. If you don’t have a logo my guess would be to tick the “Show Blog Title + Tagline” option as it will display the title and description of your blog just as in the live preview (though I used an image for that logo). Or if you do have a logo, paste it’s link in the input and… that’s all.
Syndication / Feed URL. If you are using any other service but the WP’s default one, just paste the link where the users can grab your feeds from in the input.
Timthumb. Timthumb is the resizing script that will resize all the images you are using so they fit where they need! By default it will crop the images so the captured area is the center one, but you can have that changed from the dropdown here.
Copyright Text. Left bottom side of your website (right underneath the footer), there is your copyright information. You might want to replace that one with your information.
Google Analytics. If you are using the Google Analytics service, just place the code that you are given by them in the textarea and you should be done.
2. Navigation:
As of WordPress 3.0 you now have much more control over your sites menu with WordPress’s new Navigation Menus feature. The Menus feature allows you to create a navigation menu of pages, categories, custom links, tags, etc. that is presented to your visitors. Below is a link to WordPress’s documentation on their new navigation menus feature:
http://codex.wordpress.org/Appearance_Menus_SubPanel
If you’re currently running an earlier version of WordPress which doesn’t support Navigation Menus selecting the “Navigation” tab in your theme’s option page will bring up all of the options available for managing your menu navigation.
Simply click on the check-box of the page that you would like to hide from your menu as shown below:
Breadcrumb Navigation. Tick this option to enable breadcrumbs. Simple as it is.
For the “SEO Options” and “Translations” I won’t add any additional information as the interface is pretty intuitive and doesn’t need any additional description. Though, if you have any questions, feel free to ask them at anytime on the support forums.
4. Widget areas
The template comes with the following widget areas:
Header AD Front Content Sidebar Footer column 1 Footer column 2 Footer column 3 Footer column 4
The Header AD area is only for the header advertising. Leave it blank unless you don’t want to place a widget in there.
The Front Content widget area is for the Homepage Content (this is where the homepage pulls it’s content from actually, unless you don’t want to change it from your WordPress Administration Panel).
Sidebar and Footer columns say everything about them so I figured that no additional description is needed for them. But, if you have any questions, feel free to ask them on the forums!
5. Custom widgets
Besides the WordPress’ default widgets, I have included another 9 custom widgets to be used with the theme.
Here’s a list of all of them. Scroll down for each’s description.
Advertise Featured Video Flickr Photos Latest News Latest News - Category wise Lastest Posts 1 Column Popular Posts Slider Twitter - Latest tweets
The following widgets SHOULD ONLY BE USED ON THE FRONT CONTENT AREA:
Latest News - Category wise Slider Latest Posts 1 Column
Any other widgets presented above can do fine on any other widget area such as the sidebar or a footer column.
The Latest News – Category wise widget will list the top news (1 large and the other in a list underneath it, as you can see them on the live preview, right under the slider). It works as a split column widget, so you will have to place 2 of them (any mutltiple of 2 should work actually, I’ve used 4 on the live preview). As mentioned above, ONLY TO BE USED ON THE FRONT CONTENT AREA.
The Slider widget will pull the latest posts from a list of categories and display them as a slider as it can be viewed on the live preview.
The Latest Posts 1 Column will display the posts from a category / more categories in a magazine / community like format, the same as you can see on any archive link. Example: http://unithemes.net/preview/widezine/light/category/comminity/
The Flickr photos widget will pull the lastet X photos from your Flickr gallery. You will have to insert your idgetter ID. If you don’t know what this is, please check the following link: http://idgettr.com/
The Twitter widget will pull the lastet N tweets. Simple as it is.
The Popular posts widget will display the latest N popular news.
The Featured Video widget was manily designed for the SIDEBAR area, so I haven’t tested this yet. It will display a video that you select. Please note that the video must be used in a post first.
The Advertise widget shall be used anywhere you’d like to, even on the front content area. You will just have to paste in your code in the textarea and the ads will be there. It’s not really a custom widget, but more like a text widget, though it will clearly parse all the code inputted as there may be lots of unexpected things with the text area.
And finally, the Latest news widget, will display the N latest posts from a / more categories. Simple as it is.
6. Setting up a post
Every post is designed to have an image. To add an image, just click “Set featured image” in the post editing page (right bottom of your screen). Please make sure that the image is larger than 720px width wise.
7. Template pages
Your theme comes with two WordPress template pages that you can select when you edit/publish a page from the “Edit Page” “Attributes” settings box as seen below:
The Full Width template: Disables WordPressʼs widget area and allows you to layout content across the full width of the page.
The Sitemap template: Creates a page that lists all of your sites internal “Pages”, “Feeds”, “Categories”, “Blog Posts” and Archives.
8. CSS files
The theme uses the style.css file for the layout, typography and light colors. For the dark version, there is an additional CSS file that is overriding the colors and rules from the light one and it is located under /wp-content/themes/widezine/lib/css/style_dark.css. There are also additional CSS files in this folder, but they are only used for jQuery libraries or the Internet Explorer fix.
For any modifications to the style.css file, I’d recommend you using the custom.css file located in the theme’s folder. It is also available for editing in the theme’s custom admin panel.
9. Javascript
Your theme contains many advanced jQuery functions to produce the slider fading effect, image hover animation effect, and drop down menu navigation.
If you feel the need to customize any functions for any reason, all of your theme’s jQuery functions are located in a file called “custom.js” in your theme’s scripts directory /wp-content/theme/widezine/lib/js/
To activate the lightbox on a link add the rel=”lightbox” or rel=”prettyPhoto” to the link. Example:
<a href="/your_image_big.jpg" rel="prettyPhoto">
<img src="/your_image_small.jpg" />
</a>
10. PSDs
Included with your theme are layered PSD’s for easy editing of the layout. Please note that only the PSD for the light skin is included. The dark one will come in the upcoming version. Sorry for any inconvenience!
